Yep, that’s right, today we’re talking my Basic Waffle Recipe. I know what you’re thinking, everyone knows how to make waffles right? Well, I always thought waffles were far too fancy and complicated for my limited baking skills. Plus I’m not a fan of kitchen gadgets. They take up too much bench space then (once the novelty has worn off) clog up my cupboards.
But here’s the thing… I love waffles. Not only are they pretty to look at, those little pockets are perfect for catching maple syrup. Yum. 🙂
My local supermarket had started selling prepackaged waffles. You know, the kind you heat up in the toaster? I was so close to buying a pack one day when it occurred to me it would be heaps cheaper (and yummier) if I just bought a waffle maker and made my own from scratch.
So I did it. I went against my own no-gadgets rule and popped down to Myer to buy a reasonably priced waffle maker. After all, I needed to spend that gift voucher I’d been given last Christmas. Now, not only was I going to make my family healthy waffles from scratch I was helping the local economy as well. (lol)
Today’s Basic Waffle Recipe isn’t ground-breaking or super-food cooking. Whilst I’m all about healthful, wholefoods most of the time I do think there’s something to be said for a yummy, old-school recipe. Everything in moderation I reckon. Plus, I feel like you can balance it out by serving your waffles as I have here; coconut yogurt, fresh blue berries, mango (back in season, hooray!), pepitas and a drizzle of maple syrup.
What about you? What’s your favorite way to serve waffles?
Basic Waffle Recipe
Makes four 15cm round waffles
1 cup plain flour
2 tbs sugar
1/2 tbs baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
3 tbs vegetable oil
1 large egg
Method:
- In a large mixing bowl combine your dry ingredients, the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
- Now add your wet ingredients and mix with a whisk until blended and smooth. The batter will be quite thick – this is desirable.
- Leave your waffle mixture to sit for at least 5 minutes before using.
- Preheat your waffle maker until you’ve reached optimum temperature. (each waffle maker is different, check instructions for preheat times)
- Pour 1/2 cup of batter into the middle of the waffle maker and gently close the lid. Most waffle makers will have an indicator light to let you know when it’s ready so go by your own gadget’s settings.
- When they’re ready, carefully open the lid and remove the waffle round with a spatula to either a cooling rack or straight to the plate. Serve with toppings of your choice.
